Al Gore continues to combat Donald Trump’s destruction of the environment. An environmental conference was canceled after Trump’s election, and Gore saved it.
Trump’s recent policies against the environment threaten humans, animals, and plants alike.
He signed legislation and executive orders that make the air and water dirtier and cripple the Environmental Protection Agency.
Luckily, Gore is there to fight him all the way. He held a meeting on the environment that Trump canceled soon after his inauguration.
The Climate & Health Meeting, which the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored, took place on February 16, 2017, at the non-profit Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia. In spite of Trump’s efforts, Gore and others held the meeting.
There were other sponsors of the meeting, including the Harvard Global Health Institute, the Turner Foundation, and the Climate Reality Project, which Gore founded.
These environmental leaders had plenty to discuss at the meeting.
In Trump’s forty-six days in office, he appointed a climate denier as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, signed legislation to poison water, and committed other dastardly, environmentally destructive actions.
Probably the most egregious act was the appointment of Scott Pruitt to head the EPA. Pruitt, the former Attorney General of Oklahoma, is a climate change denier.
While the Oklahoma Attorney General, Pruitt filed numerous lawsuits on behalf of gas and oil interests. Now, he heads the same agency that he sued.
Pruitt and Trump are true to form with their anti-climate agenda. Trump’s recent budget cuts funding for the EPA from 8.2 to 6 billion dollars a year.
This will result in some staff reductions and will not enable regional directors to enforce EPA policies on clean air and water.
Many programs like the U.S. Global Change Research Program, which studies climate change, will end.
The program established by George W. Bush will receive no funding to continue its important research.
Another threat to our waterways received approval from Congress and Trump. Republicans passed legislation that will repeal the Stream Protection Rule, which prohibited coal dust from being poured into the waterways.
Yes, folks, power companies and coal burners can pour coal dust into our waterways. The result is further pollution and a threat to the life-sustaining drinking water supply.
Another threat to clean water is the rollback of President Obama’s “Waters of the United States,” or WOTUS, rule.
This rule gave the EPA jurisdiction to protect bodies of water from pollution. This rollback is another threat to our already limited drinking water sources.
And Congress is also busy at destroying the environment so greedy corporations can make more profits.
Billionaires as Charles and David Koch hate environmental rules and the EPA. And they contribute heavily to the Republican Party to the tune of almost 900 million dollars in 2016.
Well, Republicans have to pay their debt to the Koch Brothers and other greedy entrepreneurs.
So Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, with numerous Republican co-sponsors, recently introduced H.R. 861, which calls for the termination of the EPA on December 31, 2018.
Yes, the end of the agency that protects our air, water, and monitors climate change. This is disgusting.
The war on the environment by Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans must stop.
And it is up to us to stop it by calling our elected representatives and asking them why they want the world to die.
After all, without clean and water, life will cease, which seems to the goal of the Republican Party and Trump.
